Navigating the MVD

Back home in Chicago, we called it the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). Here in Arizona, it is the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) and 14 years later I still call it the DMV!

It was not somewhere you looked forward to visiting but honestly, it is a well-oiled machine. The use of technology is first rate! There is a link to the MVD on the Useful Links page (click on the top menu).

Arizona is a state that requires you to update your info immediately upon establishing residency. Your first driver’s license will require you to start the process online and make an appointment to complete.  Transferring your vehicle and title can even be done online (first time may require an in-person visit). You will have to go in for emission test if required. It is truly amazing and one of the best and efficient experiences you will have.

On the webpage to the AZMVD, you will find several YouTube videos explaining exactly what you need to do to complete a vast array of transactions and you can of course, pay online!  Pricing for vehicle registration is based of blue book value of the car being registered – not a flat fee unfortunately!  The good news there is the older the vehicle, the less it will cost, and you can opt to renew for 2 years at a time!

Voter Registration is also available.  I’m a fan and it gets a big thumbs up from me!
