Summer in the Valley

It’s hot!  That is an understatement and if you’re new to the area, there are some things you definitely need to know especially if you are an outdoor adventurer.

The Phoenix Fire Department in conjunction with the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department has published a checklist with 8 great rules that should be followed during the summer heat wave:

  • Watch the Weather
  • Dress Appropriately
  • Keep in Contact
  • Team Up
  • Be Honest
  • Don’t Trailblaze
  • Take Responsibility

They remind us that on Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak hiking is not allowed when temperatures reach 110 and above and hiking is not advised on all trails between 9am to 5pm every day during the summer, specifically the Monsoon Season when temperatures routinely reach 100 degrees plus every day!

You can find the checklist and lots of great info about hiking safety at this website: https://www.visitphoenix.com/sonoran-desert/hiking/

Each year, we hear the stories about hikers who weren’t prepared needing to be rescued. One of the things we learn as transplants is to respect the heat and always, always keep water with you.

There are a lot of activities that can be safely enjoyed – no need to hide inside. Check out the resources at this link: https://www.visitphoenix.com/sonoran-desert/hiking/

Take a Hike. Do it Right because you’re:
