Next Door – The Social Media Conundrum

If you are thinking about purchasing a new home in the Phoenix valley, one of the things that new home realtors and sales agents will tell you about is Next Door – a social media platform. It’s a great thing and wonderful that they introduce it to you, because it was meant to socialize neighbors of all the new and existing home communities.

I say it was “meant” to because Next Door has taken on a strange life all its own – in my humble opinion!

These days it resembles Facebook more than a welcoming platform for people just moving into a community.  The posts range from “hi, I just moved here” to “I lost my dog” to “my house was broken into” “or be on the lookout for this person who is a scammer” to “I lost my job and I need money, food” blah blah blah.

It’s not so much the post but the responses that quite frankly are just unbelievably mean spirited!  Much like you see on Facebook, people who respond hide their ugly responses behind the anonymity of the keyboard. A well-meaning bit of info turns into a full-on assault of that persons intent or intelligence and then you’ll see someone call the ugly response out and the war is on!

One of the most popular post is about lost animals and you would be surprised at the way that people respond or come together to reunite animals with the owners and even more surprised at the number of lost and abandoned animals that are posted but in the middle of all that good will, someone will bring up the fact that Next Door isn’t an animal lost and found and someone will respond and you know what happens next!

Should you join Next Door?  I say yes!  Despite my less than favorable review, if you scroll and avoid joining in the discussion, there is valuable information that you can gain. Construction updates, police updates and even lost animals!  Just be prepared should you decide to read or post. Next Door can be a valuable community resource, but it is not for the faint hearted!
